Athenna, who met the actor through a mutual friend, said Matthew was looking forward to focusing on his acting career and taking on new projects before his death.
“He was talking about how excited he was to have a second act and had struggles that inhibited his acting aspirations but had turned it all around and was looking forward to getting back into it full swing,” she continued.
Athenna and Matthew didn’t know each other long before his death. In fact, their lunch at Hotel Bel-Air the day before his passing was their second time meeting in person.
“He was very healthy and talking about how he was looking forward to hitting the pickleball court and how he had gotten very into it,” she continued. “He was telling me I needed to try it and it was fun. He said he was losing weight and getting in shape.”
Athenna added, “He was in a positive place and doing so good [and] was being extra healthy.”
Matthew reportedly completed a two hour Pickleball game before he was found unresponsive in a jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home by his assistant.
While authorities have ruled out foul play, a toxicology report has been ordered to determine if substances played a part in his death. It’s been confirmed via autopsy that Matthew suffered a cardiac arrest and subsequently drowned in the jacuzzi.
A Toxicology Will Be Performed On Matthew

Law enforcement has said no illicit substances were present at the actor’s home, though there was a myriad of prescription medications, leading to the request for a toxicology, which could take weeks to be fulfilled. Matthew had been open about his past struggles with addiction. Athenna claims that the Friends alum was open about his past with her during their meet-up, but seemed to be in a better place.
